Zungu Set To Join Mokwena?
Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu appears set to join Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca ahead of the new season.
The 31-year-old is a free agent after parting ways with the Brazilians at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
Zungu’s departure from Sundowns coincided with the exit of former coach Rulani Mokwena, who clashed with the club’s sporting director, Flemming Berg, over player recruitment and retention.
Mokwena reportedly expressed disappointment at Zungu’s release, believing the midfielder could have contributed to the team next season.
Zungu rejoined Sundowns in August 2022 after a stint with French side Amiens, having previously left the South African club for Vitória Guimarães SC in 2016. In the recently concluded campaign, he made 30 appearances for the defending league champions, providing three assists.
Throughout his two spells at Sundowns, Zungu amassed 123 appearances, winning four league titles, one Nedbank Cup, one Telkom Knockout, and the African Football League Cup. His overall career spans 276 matches, with 15 goals and 12 assists to his name. Notably, Zungu also played under Steve Gerrard at Rangers where he won the league title.
