Zwane Gushes On Robinson’s Appointment

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane is gushing about the club’s acquisition of former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Wendell Robinson, who now holds the same position with the Durban-based side.

Usuthu secured Robinson, who was without a club, after Sundowns dismissed him and Manqoba Mngqithi in December last year.

Robinson replaces Aubrey Vilakazi, who, according to Sportswire sources, was dismissed after allegedly displaying similar issues that led to the departure of former co-coach Vusi Vilakazi.

“Coach Wendell is obviously a huge plus in the technical team,” said Zwane, whose side suffered their second consecutive defeat, losing 2-1 to TS Galaxy at King Zwelithini Stadium on Friday.

“He’s got vast experience, been in the game for long and has achieved a lot. We needed someone like him and for us to grow, to come and add value to the team.”

Robinson joins an AmaZulu side that has struggled with goalkeeping consistency between Veli Mothwa and Richard Ofori, with Zwane finding it difficult to establish a clear number one due to fluctuating form.

“He’s one person that likes to win, he is used to winning and you can see he wants to hit the ground running,” continued Zwane.

“I think we have a very good member of the technical team that will change things better for the club.”

Notably, Robinson, now 52, was part of the Bidvest Wits team under Roger de Sa that defeated AmaZulu in the 2010 Nedbank Cup final at FNB Stadium.

Although his playing career was not particularly distinguished, he achieved considerable success with Sundowns. He was appointed as Sundowns’ goalkeeper coach in November 2012 and won nine league titles, three Nedbank Cups, two Carling Knockout Cups, the MTN8, the CAF Champions League, the CAF Super Cup, and the African Football League.
