Zwane Set For 50th Bafana Bafana Cap Against Congo

Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane is poised to reach a significant milestone when he takes the field against Congo Brazzaville in their crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha tonight.

The experienced midfielder will earn his 50th cap for South Africa if he features in the match against the visiting Congolese side.

Along with captain Ronwen Williams and Percy Tau (both on 46 caps), Zwane is one of the most seasoned players in the squad aiming to qualify for the continental tournament to be held in Morocco next year.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos named him as the skipper of the side when the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification started, as skipper Ronwen Williams was absent due to an injury.

Zwane, born in Tembisa, made his Bafana Bafana debut in 2014, coming on as a substitute against Australia in a friendly match. Since then, he has amassed 49 appearances, scored 12 goals, and racked up a total of 3,479 minutes. His maiden goal for the national team came against Burkina Faso in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in 2017.

The 35-year-old has earned widespread praise for his exceptional midfield abilities, and Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos continues to extol his virtues. Zwane scored twice as Bafana Bafana hammered Namibia 4-0 in the group stages of the Africa Cup of Nations as Bafana claimed the bronze medal.

The veteran midfielder also scored twice in a 3-3 draw against Algeria in a FIFA World series in March. He also danced away in June’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria, opening the Super Eagles at will before firing past Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Zwane will become the second player for Bafana Bafana to earn his 50th cap at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after former Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo did so in November 2020 for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sao Tome. Impressively, Zwane scored twice on that as they won 4-2.
