Modiba Urges Sundowns To Focus On Their Title Defence

Mamelodi Sundowns left-back Aubrey Modiba has insisted that his side is only focused on their own form amidst Orlando Pirates’ title charge, with the Soweto Giants having climbed to the summit of the league on Saturday.

Sundowns return to domestic competition as they take on Siwelele in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday [19:30].

The Tshwane giants played out a goalless draw in their last encounter in Algiers against Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger side in the CAF Champions League on Friday

Miguel Cardoso’s side will certainly be looking to gain maximum points against the Betway Premiership newcomers and reclaim the top spot.

“Obviously, we are expecting a very tough game. Things are tough in the PSL now; teams are doing well, but I think we are ready for the task. I don’t think we are going to dwell on their previous results because now it is a different game,” said Modiba.

“With us, teams always get motivated when they play against us, which is a good thing for the league as well. I think as a team we are going to prepare well for that game. As I said, we just came back after the long trip. The coaches will prepare for the game again, as well as the players, and focus on that game, which, for us, is important to get all three points. It is not going to be an easy game.”

Sundowns are currently in second place on the log standings with 25 points, three points behind Pirates.

However, the former SuperSport United defender has insisted that last season’s league champions need to focus on themselves as they head into their last match of the year.

“I think it is important to focus on ourselves as a team. We know, obviously, that we are number two on the log, but there are still lots of games to play,” said the South African international

”Obviously, this is the last game in the league this year. We need to get the three points and go back to where we belong. We need to make sure we win our games and not focus on other teams, and I think that can help us to defend our title, but we just want to take each game as it comes and not focus on other teams and the log.”

A win is of paramount importance for Masandawana as they look to reassert their dominance in a league that they have won for the last eight seasons.
