Pupuma Outlines Milford’s Tactical Masterstroke And Early Payday Plans

Milford coach Xanti Pupuma insists that promotion destiny is firmly in their own hands, emphasizing that the onus rests squarely on his players to maximize their back-to-back home fixtures.

The KwaZulu-Natal side seized the outright summit of the mini-league table after grinding out a phenomenal 1-0 victory over Cape Town City in the playoff opener at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

Why Did Milford FC Use a Low Block Against Cape Town City?

While Milford temporarily rest up, they will closely monitor how a wounded Citizens outfit responds this coming Saturday when they visit top-flight survivors Magesi FC, who entered the lottery after finishing 15th in the Betway Premiership.

Pupuma candidly admitted that his team had to sacrifice their attacking fluidly mid-game to guarantee the three points on the road.

“Now the onus is on us because we have secured two massive home games,” Pupuma stated on SuperSport TV.

“It is entirely about how we mentally and physically handle those fixtures. For the neutral fans, this opener was incredibly exciting. My team played remarkably well for the first 60 to 70 minutes. After that, we realized we just had to consolidate whatever we could protect.”

“We deliberately opted for a disciplined low block, which ultimately worked beautifully for us,” Pupuma added.

“We used this exact structural blueprint in Upington during our final match of the Motsepe Foundation Championship season to get across the line. We know it works, so we embrace it.”

When Is Milford FC’s Next Promotion Playoff Fixture?

Milford will officially welcome Magesi to the Umhlathuze Sports Complex on 3 June, before hosting Cape Town City at the exact same venue just three days later. They will complete their high-stakes round-robin playoff schedule on 13 June.

It has been an incredibly exhausting marathon campaign for the breakout club. Beyond their league commitments, Milford captured national headlines during a sensational Nedbank Cup run, where they stormed all the way to the semi-finals before agonizingly bowing out to TS Galaxy via a tense penalty shootout.

Recognizing the immense physical and emotional toll on his squad, the tactician revealed a unique managerial strategy to refresh his players before the final push.

“We are heading home, and that is the single most important factor for us right now,” Pupuma concluded smilingly.

“I am giving the boys a well-deserved two-day break. In fact, I am going to formally ask our finance department to process their salaries early so they can enjoy time with their families with peace of mind. We will regroup on Friday to place our complete, undivided focus on winning these two home games.”
