From Umlazi To Pirates: The Grassroots Machine Launching South Africa’s Next Football Icons

The award-winning Hollywoodbets Khabba Cup returns for its fifth edition on 6–7 June, with matches taking place at the SJ Smith Stadium (Wema Hostels) and Umlazi’s King Zwelithini Stadium.
The highly anticipated youth development tournament continues to provide a crucial platform for South Africa’s brightest young football talents to showcase their skills in front of professional scouts and top industry stakeholders. Over the years, the competition has successfully launched several high-profile professional careers.
Notable graduates include Orlando Pirates duo Thalente Mbatha and Yanela Mbuthuma, who both won the treble this season.
Durban City’s Samkelo Maseko, Richards Bay’s Lundi Mahala, and Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Thabo Cele are others who have featured in this tournament.
The Khabba Cup made history in 2025 as the inaugural recipient of the Kasi Tournament of the Year accolade, presented at the prestigious South African Football Journalists’ Association (SAFJA) Awards.
Tournament founder and local football legend Manqoba Mkhize described the initiative as more than just a sports competition. “It is a life-changing platform that gives young people from our communities hope, exposure, and a tangible opportunity to pursue their dreams through sport,” Mkhize stated.
“We are incredibly proud of the impact the Hollywoodbets Khabba Cup continues to deliver. Seeing players progress from this grassroots level straight into professional football structures validates exactly why we created this initiative. We look forward to anchoring another highly successful tournament this year.”
The 2026 edition expects to draw elite academy teams and thousands of passionate supporters from across the country, setting the stage for a weekend of high-stakes talent scouting, elite football action, and vibrant community entertainment.
