‘Nothing But Pride’: Shandu Drops Emotional Farewell After Sudden Pirates Exit

Former Orlando Pirates defender Bandile Shandu has penned an emotional farewell message to the club after it was decided that his contract would not be renewed, bringing an end to a memorable five-year spell with the Buccaneers.
Sportswire first reported that Shandu’s contract with Pirates would expire at the end of June, with the club opting not to extend his stay.
Shandu joined Pirates ahead of the 2021/22 season on a free transfer after Durban City, then known as Maritzburg United, parted ways with him. He quickly established himself as an important figure at the Soweto giants, making an immediate impact during his debut campaign.
The versatile defender played a key role in helping Pirates reach the final of the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup, where they narrowly lost to Moroccan side RS Berkane. Shandu enjoyed an outstanding continental campaign, finishing as the tournament’s third-highest goalscorer while also ending as Pirates’ leading scorer in the competition.
During his five-year stay at the club, Shandu was part of one of the most successful periods in Pirates’ recent history. He helped the Buccaneers win eight major trophies, including two Nedbank Cup titles, four MTN8 crowns, the Carling Knockout Cup, and the Betway Premiership title. The recently concluded season proved particularly memorable as Pirates secured a domestic treble.
Taking to Instagram, Shandu reflected on his journey with gratitude and pride.
“As I close this chapter of my life, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude for a club that has been my home for the past five years. This journey has shaped me not only as a player but, more importantly, as a person. I leave with nothing but cherished memories and immense pride in what we have achieved together,” he wrote.
“It’s impossible not to reflect on the journey. Over five years with the club, we secured an incredible collection of silverware — two Nedbank Cup trophies, four MTN8 titles, one Carling Knockout Cup, and a Betway Premiership title. On the continental stage, we reached the final of the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup, finishing as runners-up, and I was honoured to end the tournament as the third-highest goalscorer.
“What a humbling journey it has been alongside such talented teammates and an exceptional technical staff. There is something deeply fulfilling about walking the path that God has intended for you. Truly, what an honour, and what a God-filled five years it has been.
“To the management and coaching staff, thank you for your unwavering support and for constantly pushing me to grow, both as an athlete and as an individual. I will carry every lesson learned with me into the future.
“To my teammates, thank you for an incredible five years. We have created unforgettable memories and built genuine, lasting bonds. I wish each of you nothing but success — continue to represent the badge with pride, both on and off the pitch.
“To the supporters, thank you for your unwavering loyalty, your electrifying presence, and the energy you brought to every matchday. You made this journey even more special.
“I wish the club continued success in the years ahead. Thank you once again for everything.”
Shandu departs Orlando Pirates having left a lasting mark on the club, with his contributions helping the Buccaneers enjoy one of the most successful eras in their modern history.
