Amajimbos’ Historic Run In World Cup Comes To An End

Amajimbos’ remarkable journey in the FIFA World Cup U17 in Qatar came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat against Japan in the round of 32 at Aspire Zone – Pitch 3.
Despite the loss, the 2025 COSAFA Cup U17 champions can hold their heads high after making history by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their World Cup campaign.
The team, coached by Vela Khumalo, had a promising start to the match, creating scoring opportunities in the opening two minutes.
However, they failed to capitalize on their chances, and as the game wore on, Japan began to take control.
The Japanese side dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities, but Amajimbos’ goalkeeper made some crucial saves to keep the score goalless at halftime.
The second half saw Japan take the initiative, scoring two goals in quick succession.
Hiroto Asada opened the scoring in the 48th minute with a well-placed right-footed shot from the right side of the six-yard box.
Minato Yoshida doubled Japan’s lead in the 59th minute with a clinical finish from the center of the box.
Japan continued to press Amajimbos, and their dominance was rewarded with a third goal in the 72nd minute through Shot Fujii’s header from the center of the box.
Despite their best efforts, Amajimbos were unable to respond, and Japan controlled the game until the final whistle.
Amajimbos’ campaign may have ended, but their achievement in reaching the knockout stage is a testament to the team’s talent and determination.
Their group stage performances, which included a win against Bolivia, a draw against Qatar, and a loss to Italy, earned them four points and a second-place finish.
The team’s historic run will undoubtedly inspire future generations of South African footballers.
