Appollis Confident In-Form Bucs Stars Will Help Bafana’s AFCON Quest

Having just won his second piece of silverware with Orlando Pirates, Oswin Appollis says the club’s Bafana Bafana contingent will carry their strong form into the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Morocco.

The Buccaneers defeated Marumo Gallants by 1-0 to clinch the Carling Knockout Cup at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, thanks to a Relebohile Mofokeng strike in the 105th minute, who himself is a Bafana Bafana player.

Nine players from the Carling Knockout Cup champions were named in Hugo Broos’ 25-man squad for the Africa Cup Nations tournament in Morocco this month.

“We have a long way to go through training. So, we will go with this form and just work hard there and prepare well for AFCON,” said Appollis.

The Carling Knockout Cup final Man of the Match has already won two trophies at his new club, having helped his side win the MTN8 cup earlier this season.

Hugo Broos will certainly be hoping that is the case if his side is to better their showing in the last edition in the Ivory Coast, where they claimed the bronze medal.

The Sea Robbers have been in fine form this campaign under new coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, with 19 wins, two draws, and three losses in 24 matches.

Appollis’ employers boast the largest number of players who will be representing the 2010 World Cup hosts at AFCON.

The 24-year-old former Ajax Cape Town development player also shared his thoughts about the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw, with his country finding themselves in Group A, alongside Mexico, South Korea, and the final side yet to be decided.

“It is a very tough group. It is not that easy, but that is something for next year. The next step is AFCON,” added the former Polokwane City player.

As a member of Bafana Bafana’s last AFCON squad, the man who hails from Bishop Lavis in Cape Town will look to fire his nation to African glory.
