Arrows Vs. Chiefs Moved To The Moses Mabhida

Golden Arrows has decided to move their Betway Premiership home match against Kaizer Chiefs to Moses Mabhida Stadium later this month, Sportswire has learned.

The game was originally scheduled for Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammersdale on 30 March. However, sources indicate it will now be played at the iconic Durban venue on the same day.

PSL General Manager Ace Ncobo is set to meet with officials from Moses Mabhida Stadium and Golden Arrows to finalize the terms, following his inspection of the facility.

Moses Mabhida Stadium is Golden Arrows’ second alternative home venue, although they haven’t played a match there this season, despite conducting some training sessions there.

Golden Arrows, owned by PSL acting CEO Mato Madlala, also maintains offices at the stadium as a tenant, alongside AmaZulu, who play their home games at the venue.

Ncobo will review the stadium, which is currently undergoing significant refurbishment. The eThekwini Municipality has approved R236 million for the rehabilitation of the 15-year-old Moses Mabhida Stadium, aiming to transform it into a premier tourist destination, as previously reported.

The stadium, which hosted the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch in October, has faced issues with deteriorating structures in recent years.

To address these concerns and enhance its appeal, the municipality unveiled plans for a comprehensive refurbishment.

The ongoing renovations include the installation of a new SkyCar, a big swing, a zip line, and a viewing platform. The SkyCar, a glass-enclosed lift that ascends the stadium’s arch, is expected to be operational by summer 2025.

Despite the ongoing refurbishments, the stadium continues to host matches. Zimbabwe will play Benin in a FIFA World Cup qualifying Group C match on Thursday afternoon.

By moving the match against Chiefs to Moses Mabhida Stadium, Arrows, now managed by former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi, might be forfeiting a potential home advantage.

Chiefs frequently uses the venue for alternative home games, having played three matches there this season. Chiefs also draw significant crowds to the stadium, and this match is expected to be no different, regardless of their recent fluctuating results, which could potentially work against Arrows.

Abafana Bes’Thende has never defeated Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium since the venue was approved for domestic use after the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Will this be the first time they break that streak? Only time will tell.
