Barker Irritated By Major Player Exodus

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has voiced his frustration following a significant exodus of key players from his squad, a situation that has left the club’s ambitions in jeopardy.
The latest departure, that of promising forward Antonio van Wyk to Austrian side SV Ried, has only added to the growing concerns within the Stellenbosch camp.
“When clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns who already have seven or eight Bafana starters in their mix, if you add Iqraam Rayners, it’s probably nine now, so, when teams like them are interested in your players, I think there are two ways to look at it,” said Barker, whose side will face Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final first leg at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.
“It can be a bit irritating because you want to have your ambitions as a team. On the other hand, you look at it and be proud of what we are doing as a football club.”
Barker, who has been instrumental in the club’s development and rise in South African football, has seen several of his key players leave for rival teams and international opportunities.
Among the players who have moved on are Qobolakhe Sibanda, Deano Van Royen, Rayners, Nhlanhla Mgaga, and Salifu Colle—all of whom were vital to Stellenbosch’s recent successes.
Barker’s irritation is understandable, as the loss of players like Iqraam Rayners to Sundowns directly impacts his team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
The forward was a key figure In Stellenbosch’s attack, and his departure, along with others, leaves a significant gap in the squad.
Stellenbosch has built a reputation for developing young talents, and while this has brought them success, it has also made their players target for bigger clubs.
The challenge now for Barker is to rebuild a squad capable of competing while maintaining the club’s identity and ambitions.
As Stellenbosch FC faces this challenging period, Barker’s comments reflect the struggle smaller clubs often face in retaining their top talent amid interest from more established teams.
The road ahead may be tough, but Barker’s resolve will be crucial as the club looks to rebuild and continue its rise in South African football.
