Boniface, Lookman, Osimhen All Part Of Nigeria Side To Face Bafana

Nigeria’s new coach, Finidi George, has named a powerful squad to face Bafana Bafana of South Africa and Benin in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month.

Victor Boniface, who recently helped Bayer Leverkusen to an undefeated Bundesliga title, returns to the team after missing the Africa Cup of Nations finals due to a February injury. Wilfred Ndidi, also sidelined with an injury during the AFCON, is back in the fold.

Leading the attack will be Victor Osimhen, aiming for Nigeria’s first win alongside Ademola Lookman, who recently scored a hat-trick for Atalanta in their Europa League final victory over Boniface’s Leverkusen.

Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali, impressive at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, also earns a call-up.

South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, will name his final squad on Thursday, having postponed the initial announcement from Monday.

Nigeria will host Bafana Bafana, a rematch of their AFCON semifinal, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on 7 June. They then travel to face Benin on 10 June, playing at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan as Benin’s stadiums don’t meet CAF standards.

Meanwhile, Bafana will host Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein on 11 June after their match against Nigeria.

The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C with two points after draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe. Bafana Bafana are second with three points, having beaten Benin at home before a surprising away loss to Rwanda, who lead the group with four points from two matches.
