Chiefs Confirm Blockbuster Overseas Move For Academy Starlet McCarthy

Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed the transfer of promising young defender Aden McCarthy to Azerbaijani top-flight outfit Sabah FK for an undisclosed fee.
The highly-rated center-back, who is the son of legendary former Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana defender Fabian McCarthy, brings an end to his developmental chapter at Naturena to secure a dream move to Europe ahead of the 2026/27 global campaign.
McCarthy’s impressive tactical discipline and leadership qualities caught the eye of the Baku-based club following his consistent performances within the Amakhosi structures and fringe first-team call-ups. His move marks a significant structural pivot for the Soweto giants, who continue to show a willingness to export their finest youth academy products directly to competitive European leagues.
“Kaizer Chiefs’ promising young defender Aden McCarthy is set to leave the Club after completing a transfer to Azerbaijan-based Sabah FK,” the club announced in an official press release.
Amakhosi Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. expressed immense pride in the academy graduate’s progression, revealing that the club chose not to stand in the way of the youngster’s European ambitions.
“We can confirm that we have agreed to release Aden after being approached by Sabah FK,” said Motaung Jr. “We are proud that he will have the opportunity to compete in the qualifying rounds of European competition next season. We know Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe, and we are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”
Sabah FK is a destination well-remembered by local football purists. The Azerbaijani side previously served as the footballing home of another former Kaizer Chiefs playmaker, Hendrick “Pule” Ekstein, who enjoyed a high-profile stint with the club during the 2019/20 season before returning home to join AmaZulu FC.
