Chiefs Retire Jersey Number 26 In Honor Of Fleurs
Kaizer Chiefs have officially retired jersey number 26 in honor of their late defender, Luke Fleurs.
Fleurs was tragically shot and killed during a carjacking in Johannesburg last week.
A memorial service was held at FNB Stadium on Thursday, where Chiefs’ Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr., announced the retirement of Fleurs’ jersey number.
Fleurs, who joined the club late last year after his release from SuperSport United, never had the opportunity to play an official match for the Amakhosi.
Police have confirmed the arrest of six suspects in connection with the carjacking and murder. The stolen car was found stripped.
“Yesterday (Thursday), Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. announced that Luke Fleurs’ jersey number 26 has been officially retired by the club in his memory,” a statement from Kaizer Chiefs reads.
Fleurs, who impressed during his formative years at SuperSport United, was named PSL Young Player of the Year for the 2021/22 season.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed that a moment of silence will be observed in honor of Fleurs at all Nedbank Cup and DStv Diski Challenge fixtures this coming weekend.
