Chiefs Sign Former Mamelodi Sundowns Star

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lebohang Maboe.

The 31-year-old was released by Sundowns at the end of last season after spending the second half of the campaign on loan at SuperSport United.

Maboe’s time at Sundowns, which began in the 2018/19 season after he joined from Maritzburg United, will be remembered by both clubs. He famously scored a hat-trick in the final match of the 2019/20 season against Black Leopards, a win that secured the league title for Sundowns and snatched it from the grasp of Chiefs, who only needed a win on the final day to clinch the title but were held to a draw by Baroka FC.

During his tenure with Sundowns, Maboe won an impressive six league titles, two Nedbank Cups, one Carling Knockout, one MTN8, and the inaugural African Football League.

At Chiefs, Maboe will be reunited with his former teammate Siphesihle Ndlovu, who was also signed by the club this off-season from Siwelele FC (formerly SuperSport United). The two players previously formed a formidable partnership at Maritzburg United under coach Fadlu Davids during the 2017/18 season. Their stellar performances led to Maritzburg’s highest-ever league finish of fourth place and a run to their maiden cup final, where they lost to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup final.

Maboe is the tenth player to join Chiefs during this transfer window, following the acquisitions of Luke Baartman, Nkanyiso Shinga, Etiosa Ighodaro, Asanele Velebayi, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, and Siphesihle Ndlovu.

Interestingly, Chiefs will face Sundowns in the Betway Premiership at FNB Stadium on Wednesday (19:30).
