Former Pirates Striker Heads To Bahrain

Former Orlando Pirates striker Souaibou Marou has joined Bahrain’s Al Shabab on a one-year contract with an option to extend.

The move comes just two months after Marou terminated his contract with the Soweto giants due to limited playing time at the end of last season.

The 23-year-old forward made only nine appearances across all competitions for the Sea Robbers, without scoring a single goal. He found himself behind Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Zakhele Lepasa in the Pirates’ pecking order.

Marou joined Pirates from Cameroonian powerhouse Coton Sport during the 2023 January transfer window. The Cameroonian Ballon d’Or winner of 2022 arrived with high expectations but struggled to make an impact. He was part of Rigobert Song’s Cameroon squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they famously defeated Brazil. However, Marou did not feature in any of the group-stage matches.

Al Shabab’s season opener against Al Muharraq is scheduled for September 21. The club finished seventh in the Bahrain Premier League last season.
