Gabriel: We Showed Guts To Win Over Siwelele

Richards Bay co-coach Ronnie Gabriel showered his players with praise after their dramatic victory over Siwelele in the Nedbank Cup round-of-32 clash on Sunday, admitting the match was a “rollercoaster” that was not good for his health.

The Natal Rich Boys came from behind and then led to draw 3–3 with Siwelele before edging the hosts on penalties at Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday night to book their place in the last 16.

Lundi Mahala was once again the star performer for Richards Bay, scoring three times to rescue his side from the brink of defeat in Bloemfontein.

Richards Bay’s progression means three KwaZulu-Natal-based teams in the Betway Premiership have advanced to the Nedbank Cup round of 16, with Golden Arrows and Durban City also securing their spots in the next stage.

Gabriel had stated ahead of the encounter that Richards Bay were targeting a repeat of their impressive Carling Knockout Cup run earlier this season, where they reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Orlando Pirates.

“It was a rollercoaster of emotions,” Gabriel said.

“We went down, then up, then down again, and then back up. But going into the game, we knew we were coming up against very strong opposition—a quality team with depth and good players.

“We knew it was going to be a tough encounter, and that is exactly what we got. It took a lot of guts, determination, and courage to come away with the win, especially from such a young group of players.

“They performed fantastically well. They showed heart, desire, and character. They showed what it means to fight for the Richards Bay badge, and they deserve huge credit for the performance.”

The Natal Rich Boys will discover their opponents in the Nedbank Cup round of 16 when the draw is conducted on Wednesday.
