“Game Of Consequences”: Why Sibisi Believes Pirates’ Mentality Beats Sundowns’ Math

Orlando Pirates defender and captain Nkosinathi Sibisi believes that despite recent setbacks, the team’s resilient mentality will ultimately lead them to success.
Pirates have dropped points in recent matches, including a 1–1 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic and a 2–2 draw with Richards Bay FC—results that could benefit Mamelodi Sundowns in the title race.
However, the Soweto giants’ captain acknowledged that such moments are part of football, emphasising that the team’s response is what truly matters.
“I think for us, just like in life, we suffer setbacks,” said Sibisi during a press conference ahead of their Soweto Derby clash against Kaizer Chiefs.
“You mentioned the draws against Siwelele and Richards Bay, but it’s how you move forward and pick yourselves up that is important. The boys showed character—after the game against Siwelele, we bounced back with a win against TS Galaxy and kept a clean sheet. We suffered another setback against Richards Bay recently, but we responded again.
“That’s the kind of mentality and attitude the team has shown throughout the season, and with this mindset, something has to give.”
Pirates will face Chiefs in a Betway Premiership clash at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Sunday. Both teams head into the highly anticipated Soweto Derby in strong form, having gone five consecutive matches unbeaten. This will be their second meeting of the season, following Pirates’ 3–0 victory in February.
Sibisi described the encounter as a game of major consequence, with Pirates still firmly in the title race. They currently sit at the top of the table with 58 points from 25 matches, while Sundowns are second with 56 points from 23 games and have two matches in hand. Sundowns are also set to face Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday evening.
“From the players’ perspective, preparations have been going very well,” Sibisi said.
“We’ve been working hard and putting in the effort. We’re looking forward to a very competitive game on Sunday. It’s a sold-out occasion and a game of consequence. We know we have to deliver, and that’s exactly what we intend to do.”
