“I Enjoyed It Up There”: Cardoso Drops Candid Admission On Why He Prefers North African Football

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has explained the differences between South African and North African football, revealing that he particularly enjoyed coaching in North Africa because of the aggressive nature of the game.
Before joining Sundowns, Cardoso was in charge of Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis. During his spell at the club, he guided them to the CAF Champions League final but fell short of lifting the trophy.
After taking over at Sundowns, Cardoso also lost the Champions League final in his first season at the club. However, he went one step further this season by leading the Brazilians to continental glory.
The Portuguese tactician said he appreciates the intensity and competitiveness associated with North African football, adding that the aggressive approach displayed by teams from the region is something he particularly enjoys.
“Both are passionate. Both environments are amazing in terms of fan support,” said Cardoso.
“They are absolutely different, and I enjoyed my time up there. I have to confess that I like the aggressive side of the game itself. I like being under pressure and dealing with the intensity that is placed on everyone involved.
“But I also love the affection you receive from the first minute to the last when you are in South Africa with our fans.”
Cardoso said the biggest difference lies in the mentality and intensity with which North African teams approach matches.
“The biggest difference is that the switch is always on up there as soon as the referee blows the whistle. The players are always in that mode, especially in the Champions League.
“Here, we could also develop that attitude, and now I think we have that switch turned on in the Champions League as well. That was very clear, particularly in the semi-final and the final.”
Cardoso added that the CAF Champions League requires a completely different approach from other competitions, stressing that success often comes down to managing key moments and paying close attention to detail.
“And knowing how to play in the Champions League is very, very important. It is a very particular competition, and there is a specific way to play it,” said Cardoso.
“It’s not always about being beautiful, although football can become beautiful. It’s about having the ability to overcome difficulties, understanding how to play against different teams, and always being committed to the details because details can either make you pay or make you win.”
