Keet Joins Mkhize To Depart City

Veteran goalkeeper Darren Keet has confirmed his departure from Cape Town City following the club’s relegation.

He is the second player to leave the club due to their drop to the Motsepe Foundation Championship for next season.

Cape Town City lost their top-flight status after finishing second from the bottom last season and then failing to secure their spot through the PSL relegation and promotion playoffs. Keet, a former PSL Goalkeeper of the Season with Bidvest Wits, even missed the final playoff game against Casric Stars, by which point the club’s relegation was already sealed.

Keet, who has also played abroad and was part of the Bafana Bafana squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, is now being linked with a move to Sekhukhune United, which would see him reunite with coach Eric Tinkler.

The 35-year-old’s contract with City was originally set to expire at the end of 2026, but the club’s unfortunate relegation led to its premature termination. Keet’s farewell message simply stated, “Thank you Citizens. Thank you Cape Town City FC.”

It was Eric Tinkler who brought Keet to Cape Town City in July 2021 from KV Kortrijk in Belgium. During his time with the Mother City club, Keet featured in 104 matches and remarkably kept 40 clean sheets.

Keet’s departure follows that of club captain Thami Mkhize, who also confirmed his exit from John Comitis’ side in the past few days.
