Lerumo Takes Over Gallants’ MFC Status

The upcoming season of the Motsepe Foundation Championship will see a new team in Lerumo United.

They secured the status previously held by Marumo Gallants, who in turn acquired DStv Premiership status from Moroka Swallows.

Marumo Gallants’ MFC status became available having bought the top flight status and it meant the league needed a replacement to maintain its 16-team format. Swallows, whose management faced criticism last season because of their poor management, did not manage to acquire the vacated MFC slot, opening the door for Lerumo United and other interested parties.

However, Sportswire has been informed that Lerumo United have secured the status and appointed a new coach, Stanley Nkoane, to lead the team.

“Coach Nkoane will be taking over Leruma United FC,” a source informed Sportswire. “His experience in the Motsepe Foundation Championship gives him valuable knowledge of the league’s dynamics. Negotiations are underway to finalize the terms.”

Nkoane’s familiarity with a significant portion of the former Marumo Gallants squad makes him a sensible choice. He previously coached the team during their time in the MFC last season, having joined them in a bid to retain their status. After relegation from the DStv Premiership in the 2022/23 season, Nkoane guided Gallants to an 11th-place finish. However, upon securing Swallows’ top-flight position, Gallants appointed Dylan Kerr as their new head coach.

Nkoane’s coaching credentials extend beyond this appointment. He holds a notable achievement in South African football. During the 2019/20 season, he led Vaal University of Technology (VUT) to a Nedbank Cup victory over Steve Komphela’s Golden Arrows in the first round. This win marked a historic moment, as VUT, a team from the fourth tier (SAB), became the first side from that division to defeat a premier division club.
