Magesi Aims To Defy Odds Against Ruthless Sundowns In Carling Final

There is no doubt that Mamelodi Sundowns has been efficient and ruthless at the same time on their way to the Carling Knockout final having scored an avalanche of goals.
Sundowns have scored 11 goals in three matches on their way to the final, hammering a sorry-looking Golden Arrows in the round of 16 by 5-0, 4-0 against Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-finals, and 2-0 against Marumo Gallants in the semi-final.
This means they have not conceded a goal and Magesi will have to became the first club in this season’s competition to score against Sundowns in the final at Toyota Stadium on Saturday (18:00).
However, Clinton Larsen’s side, whose stats cannot be compared to that of Sundowns, have also been good as they have won all three matches which have been played away en route to the final.
They stunned cup kings Orlando Pirates by 3-2 in the first round, scoring all three goals in the first half to suffocate the Soweto Giants in the round of the 16.
It was a game that everyone predicted would be easy for Pirates, who won the MTN8 last month against Stellenbosch, their third MTN8 title on the trot.
In the quarter-finals, Magesi narrowly beat TS Galaxy, who were losing finalists in the final last season, 1-0. In the semifinals, they beat KZN side Richard Bay by also 1-0, capitalizing on the costly mistake by Bay to win the game.
Revitalized Magesi defender Limbikani Mzava, who has been the stalwart in the defense for the newbies’ side, said facing Sundowns is an ultimate test for them but they can be beatable.
“It is going to be the biggest test for sure,” Mzava told Sportswire.
“But in football, anything can happen. I know we have faced bigger teams, but for us, it is just for us to focus on what the coach (Clinton Larsen) is telling us on what to do and keep on working hard like the way we have been doing in those past games.
“We might be scared because we are playing against Sundowns, but we need to play according to the plan that the coach is trying to implement.”
Although Magesi is rated as the second favorite in this match, however, they come to this game with a bit of momentum. They are unbeaten in the last seven matches in all competitions, having won four and drawn three.
Additionally, Mzava previously won this competition with Larsen with Bloemfontein Celtic in the 2012/13 season against the very same Sundowns in Durban. They were seen as not as favorite in that game but Larsen was able to put the plan together and won the game for Celtic.
Mzava said they can do something magical for Magesi, who are making their debut in the top flight football this season after gaining promotion last term.
“We can do something, we will go there with respect, but also showcase our talent,” said Mzava.
“By the end of the day, we will see who is going win.”
