Mariko On Dream Pirates Debut And Honoring Club’s Legacy

New Orlando Pirates midfielder Abdoulaye Mariko has spoken with pride about making his debut in the famous black and white jersey, calling it one of the proudest moments of his career.

The 22-year-old joined the Buccaneers during the off-season from Malian club Djoliba FC. He arrived with a growing reputation as a rising star in his home country, having played a key role in Djoliba’s run to the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

While five other Pirates debutants on the day had played at Orlando Stadium before, the MTN8 quarter-final was Mariko’s first-ever appearance at the venue. He entered the game in the final 20 minutes, and his solid cameo, which included some neat touches, delighted the sell-out crowd.

Mariko on His Dream Debut

Speaking on the club’s website, Mariko described the experience as a dream come true.

“Wearing the Pirates jersey for the first time felt like a dream come true,” he said. “I knew I was representing a club with great history, pride, and passionate supporters—I felt a deep responsibility to give my best.”

Mariko, who grew up admiring legendary midfielders Yaya Toure and N’Golo Kante, was inspired by their work ethic, humility, and intelligence—qualities that were on display during his brief time on the field.

He is well aware of the prestige of representing the 1995 Champions League winners, who had a strong season last term, reaching the semi-final of the same competition, winning the MTN8, and finishing second in the Betway Premiership, and losing the Nedbank Cup final.

“Playing for Orlando Pirates is more than just football; it’s about representing a legacy,” he added.

“It means discipline, honor, and a commitment to excellence. I feel blessed to be part of such a prestigious club.”

Mariko expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he has received from the fans. “To the fans, I want to say thank you for the warm welcome and your support. You can expect me to always give 100%, with passion and commitment in every match. I will work hard to make you proud and help the team achieve its goals.”

Mariko is now set for his league debut as the Buccaneers kick off their Betway Premiership campaign against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (15:00).
