Martin Smiles As Usuthu Finally Gets League Win In 2024

AmaZulu coach Pablo Franco Martin has described the victory of his side over Cape Town City in the DStv Premiership at DHL Stadium as “huge” on Sunday.

Usuthu beat City 1-0 when Junior Dion bundled the home in the 71st minute, to register their first win of the season away, precisely outside of KwaZulu-Natal.

It was also Usuthu’s first league win in 2024, having gone six games since the season resumed after the Africa Cup of Nations finals in February.

However, it did little to affect Usuthu’s position as they still dropped to 12th in the DStv Premiership table with 28 points, the same number as provincial rivals Royal AM, who defeated Polokwane City 3-2 on Sunday.

“It was a huge win for us away from home against one of the best teams in the PSL,” said Martin, who this victory was just their sixth in 23 league matches.

“With our situation, the weather was complicated, especially what happened before when we were told we were not going to play…

“But football is not the most important thing in life and the authorities did not want to risk people (coming in) in case of playing this game.”

The game was played behind closed doors and came close not to taking place as the wind condition in Cape Town was wreckage, damaging houses in the city seaside.

The boards that surround the pitch were also removed, in case the wind blows them away and causes injuries to the players on the pitch just like what happened a few seasons ago at Orlando Stadium.

Because of Mother Nature, the fans were also told not to come to the stadium, and Cape Town City informed those who bought tickets that they would be reimbursed them back.

“The most important thing today, is we are safe and sound and from there nothing happened,” added Martin.

“We got the results, the three points and unlucky not being a huge win for us, but unluck is not the most important thing.”

Usuthu turns their focus now to Orlando Pirates, who massacred Golden Arrows 7-1 on Saturday, this coming weekend.
