Mazembe And Ahly Share The Spoils In CAF semis First Leg

The first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final between TP Mazembe and Al Ahly ended in a goalless draw at Stade de Mazembe on Saturday.

This result puts Mazembe at a disadvantage heading into the second leg at Cairo International Stadium next Friday.

Al Ahly, known for their strength at home during these knockout stages, will be pleased to have kept a clean sheet. Fans in Lubumbashi, who came out in large numbers to see this clash between two African giants, may be disappointed by the lack of goals.

Mazembe reached the semifinals by defeating Petro de Luanda 2-1 on aggregate. They drew 0-0 at home in the first leg but emerged victorious 2-1 in the return leg thanks to goals from Philippe Kinzumbi and Joël Beya.

Ahly also secured their place in the semis with a 3-0 aggregate win over Simba. They won the first leg 1-0 away and followed it up with a 2-0 victory at home.

This was the first meeting between these two teams since September 2012, when Mazembe won 2-0 after losing the first leg 2-1 in Cairo during the group stages.

It was a landmark occasion for South African forward Percy Tau, who made his 100th appearance for Al Ahly. He, along with his teammates, will be content with keeping a clean sheet away from home.

Later tonight (21:00), South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns travel to Tunisia to face ES Esperance at Olympique Hammadi Agrebi in Radès.
