Modise Warns Sundowns Ahead Of Gallants Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Teko Modise has warned that struggling teams can be dangerous when facing the defending champions. 

Sundowns will play their Betway Premiership against struggling Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The Tshwane giants go into this game aiming for a win that would lift them into first place, displacing Orlando Pirates, who were held to a draw by Siwelele on Sunday. 

Meanwhile, Gallants are battling to escape the relegation zone, as they are sitting in 14th place with 18 points from 21 games.

Sundowns occupy second position with 47 points after 21 games.

Modise, the two-time PSL Footballer of the Season, has stressed that there’s no actual guarantee that Sundowns can win the game against Gallants, noting that it’s often harder to play against sides fighting to avoid relegation.

“I mean, we can’t ignore the fact that looking at the log, one would have expected maybe going into the Marumo Gallants game three points behind, and it’s not the case,” said Modise on Mamelodi Sundowns TV.

“So it just shows you the difficulties as well as that there’s no guarantee anymore. So you need to actually go onto the field and be able to win your game, and look at it after winning the game. So for us now there’s more, I think, expectations. Let me put it like that.”

Modise, who won the CAF Champions League with Sundowns in 2016, added: “There’s no pressure. There are expectations to actually go into Marumo Gallants, which is really struggling. 

“But we know the difficulties of playing very struggling teams, fighting for their lives, because they tend to get into this form on the day that you don’t understand, but we need to make sure that we kill the game a little bit earlier on so that we can get back to the number one position.”
