Mokwena Reiterates: Please Be Patience With Nku

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has reiterated the need for patience with winger Lesiba Nku. Mokwena believes Nku possesses significant talent, justifying the club’s decision to sign him.
Nku joined Sundowns from Marumo Gallants during the off season. Mokwena compared Nku’s transition to that of Luka Modric at Real Madrid. Modric was initially mocked by Spanish media outlet Marca as Real’s worst signing in the 2012/13 season.
However, Modric has become a club legend, inheriting the prestigious number 10 jersey. Now 38, Modric has helped Real Madrid reach another Champions League final and win the La Liga title.
“There was a time when Real Madrid signed Luka Modric, and the fans weren’t convinced,” Mokwena said after Sundowns’ victory over Royal AM at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.
“Sundowns fans forget quickly. There were question marks around Neo Maema and Khuliso Mudau when they arrived, but with coaching and hard work, they improved significantly.”
Mudau, specifically, has arguably become the best right-back in Africa, even being named PSL Defender of the Season last year.
“I’m just pleading with the Sundowns supporters to be a bit more patient with Lesiba Nku,” Mokwena continued. “He’s got so many weapons – dribbling, pace, defending, counterpressing, and making attacking runs from wide positions. Players with these qualities are huge assets for big clubs.”
Nku showcased his talent last season, leading Marumo Gallants to the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals, despite the club’s eventual relegation.
“He needs time to adapt,” Mokwena explained. “Coming from a relegation battle where he was a key player, there’s a psychological adjustment to make when playing for a big team. Be patient, and you’ll understand why Sundowns signed Lesiba Nku.”
Interestingly, despite Mokwena’s call for patience, it was Nku’s cross that Shalulile converted for the winning goal against Royal AM, extending Sundowns’ unbeaten run and securing their 20th victory in the DStv Premiership this season.
