Mokwena: We Are Mentality Monsters
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena praised his team’s mentality, calling them “mentality monsters” after they secured a spot in the Nedbank Cup final with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday.
Sundowns will face Orlando Pirates in a rematch of the MTN8 final on 1 June at Mbombela Stadium. Pirates emerged victorious on penalties in the October 2023 encounter at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
This will be Sundowns’ third final appearance in six competitions this season. They have already secured the league title with a dominant performance and lifted the inaugural African Football League trophy in November.
Mokwena lauded his players’ unwavering spirit and tactical discipline: “I thought we were very good today; I think we got the tactics sport on,” said Mokwena on SuperSport TV.
“Big compliments to these players. I don’t know how they keep doing it, we pulled through today because of our mentality.
“I want to compliment this group of players, congratulations to them, they are mentality monsters, I’m very proud of them.”
With an undefeated league record intact after 24 matches (19 wins, 62 points), Sundowns have a chance to finish the season without a single loss. Mokwena emphasized their commitment to maintaining that record in their remaining matches.
The former Pirates coach highlighted the importance of staying focused and humble: “First, it’s a league match against Golden Arrows,” Mokwena affirmed, underscoring the team’s commitment to each match as it comes.
“We have to keep our feet on the ground, and we will cross the Pirates bridge when we get to it (Nedbank Cup final),” he added, stressing the need to remain grounded amidst their recent triumphs.”
Sundowns will travel to Mpumalanga Stadium on Wednesday (19:30) for their next league clash against Golden Arrows.
