Moses Mabhida Stadium To Host The MTN8 Final Yet Again
The iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban is set to host the MTN8 final for the fourth consecutive season on 5 October.
Sportswire has confirmed that the 2010 FIFA World Cup venue will once again be the stage for the MTN8 final. The final will be contested between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC. The PSL is expected to officially announce this decision on Wednesday.
This news will be welcomed by both Stellies and Pirates, as they have a history of success at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. After Stellenbosch defeated Mamelodi Sundowns in the second leg of the semifinals, coach Steve Barker expressed his desire to return to Durban for the final.
The second leg of Stellenbosch’s semifinal was played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium due to renovations being carried out at their home venues, Danie Craven Stadium and Athlone Stadium, following the Junior Rugby World Cup in Cape Town. Stellies also played their CAF Confederation Cup second leg preliminary round.
While the venue choice will be music to Barker’s ears, Pirates also have fond memories of playing at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. The Buccaneers have won three of the four MTN8 finals held there. Stellenbosch also clinched their first-ever trophy at the venue last season, defeating TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout.
Meanwhile, Pirates are aiming to win the MTN8 for the third consecutive time. They defeated AmaZulu in the 2022/23 season and Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties last season.
