Nabi Insists Chiefs Is Progressing Despite Inconsistency

Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi believes that his side is making good progress in certain areas of their style of play despite a run of inconsistent form throughout the season.

The Soweto giants had a decent start to the 2024/25 campaign, winning their first two matches in the Betway Premiership against Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu respectively before they fell short to a controversial defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns.

Amakhosi bounced back from the Downs loss with a resounding 4-0 victory over SuperSport United in the Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 encounter but once again Masandawana poured cold water on their celebrations as they knocked them out with a similar scoreline in the quarterfinals.

Since then, the Glamour Boys secured a 2-1 win over Richards Bay, surrendered their two-goal lead to share the spoils with Royal AM, and were recently stunned by Polokwane City, however, the Tunisian tactician maintains that there’s clear progress.

“I think if you look at the stats in PSL, the first team here in South Africa for creating goal-scoring opportunities is Kaizer Chiefs and this will give you a clear idea on which parts are we progressing on, ” said Nabi.

“We are progressing in the build-up and we are progressing in creating clear and real opportunities to score.”

Nabi, who has been entrusted with spearheading the resurrection of Chiefs, has acknowledged the defensive frailties of his team although he refuses to solely blame the back-four as he stresses the importance of teamwork.

“We work very hard in training, but it’s indeed been an issue conceding goals but we need to look at the bigger picture, ” the 59-year-old mentor said through his translator, assistant coach Cedric Kaze who joined the club in October.

“When you don’t score you give the opportunity and morale to the opponents, that’s why we don’t want to blame the defenders, we want everyone to work harder offensively and defensively.”

The Chiefs mentor went on to reveal that they are looking to delve into the market to address their inability to score goals, stating that several candidates can be roped in to solve the low conversion rate.

“We can’t create a lot of opportunities if we don’t have a clear idea of the game model we want to play and the idea we have been putting in place in training. There are a lot of options we are looking at to try and solve that [goal scoring] issue, probably bring someone that might give us a solution to that issue, ” Nabi stated.

Chiefs will swing back into action with a visit to TS Galaxy at Mbombela Stadium on Monday as they aim to improve on their ninth-placed standing. Galaxy are unbeaten in their last four league outings with two wins and two draws.
