Williams Nominated For CAF Award Alongside Adingra, Lookman, Guirassy And Hakimi
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, is one of the top five nominees for the CAF Player of the Year award. He will compete against Simon Adingra (Ivory Coast), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco), Ademola Lookman (Nigeria), and Serhou Guirassy (Guinea) for the prestigious honor.
Williams is the only African-based player among the nominees, highlighting his exceptional performances for Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. CAF was unable to narrow down the list to three due to the high level of competition and tied votes.
The winner will be announced on 16 December in Morocco, where all nominees will be present.
In the women’s category, Sanaa Mssoudy (Morocco), Chiamaka Nnandoze (Nigeria), and Barbara Banda (Zambia) have been shortlisted.
CAF is crowning players and coaches after an incredible year of 2024 where Williams stole many shows – both locally and nationally, with outstanding performances with his club Sundowns and Bafana Bafana. They have also announced other categories.
He helped Sundowns win the African Football League, Betway Premiership with record of points under coach Rulani Mokwena last season. He was named the PSL Footballer of the Year, which meant that he became the third goalkeeper in the PSL to do so.
The 32-year-old helped Bafana Bafana to claim the bronze medal in the Africa Cup of Nations finals that was held earlier in Ivory Coast, the first time have finished third in 24 years. He was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament and also was named in the Team of the Tournament.
He was nominated for the Yachine’s Ballon d’Or trophy, the ebst goalkeeper in the world, but he lost it out to Argentina and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.
Williams is nominated for the FIFA FIPRO World XI by FIFA, and he is alongside finest names in the games such as Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, Rodri and Vini Jr.
