Nabi Warns Against Hlongwane Hype: It was A Friendly Game
Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi has cautioned against overreacting to Naledi Hlongwane’s two goals for the Carling Cup All Stars team, emphasizing that it was merely a friendly match.
Hlongwane, who currently plays for Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge side, scored twice as the All Stars team, selected by fans and coached by Orlando Pirates coach Jose Ribeiro, defeated the Carling Knockout Cup champions 3-0 at Orlando Stadium almost two weeks ago.
However, Nabi confirmed that three Diski players will be drafted to train with the senior team, although he did not disclose their names.
“There is a project, and there is good collaboration with the club, especially with the coaches of the younger teams,” Nabi said. “It’s a process, and we receive reports every week or two weeks about players who could potentially train with the first team. That’s why, after the new year, three players will be joining the first team.
“But this decision isn’t based solely on Hlongwane scoring two goals. It’s a structured process, and we want to avoid emotional decisions based on a single performance.”
This was translated by his assistant coach, Cedric Kaze, before Nabi interjected to downplay Hlongwane’s performance. “It was a friendly game,” Nabi stated in English.
“Suddenly, he can play in a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” Kaze continued through translation. “It’s a process, and among those three invited, the one who performs the best will be given a chance to stay and play with the first team.”
Following their victory over Chippa United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday, another Diski Chiefs graduate stole the headlines. Mdu Shabalala, displaying impressive skill, cut inside, beat four defenders, and scored at the near post on the stroke of halftime, beating Nigerian international Stanley Nwabali. This goal secured all three points for Chiefs.
The win propelled Chiefs to seventh place in the Betway Premiership table with 15 points from 10 matches.
