Chiefs End 2024 With A Victory Over Chippa

Mdu Shabalala capped off a dominant performance with a brilliant individual goal as Kaizer Chiefs defeated Chippa United in a Betway Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday.
Shabalala collected the ball on the wing, cut inside, and skillfully navigated past several Chippa defenders before unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner of the net. This crucial victory lifted Chiefs to seventh place in the table with 15 points from 10 matches, one point ahead of both Chippa United and Golden Arrows. It also marked their first clean sheet in the league this season.
Chiefs arrived at the match with a recent history of struggles against Chippa in Durban. However, they successfully ended this losing streak at their adopted home ground.
The 2024 season has been a challenging one for Chiefs, with only seven victories across all competitions. This underwhelming performance highlighted the need for significant improvement.
Chiefs entered this match with a concerning record: 13 goals scored and 13 conceded in nine league games. They also arrived on a three-match losing streak in the league, making this victory all the more important to end the year on a positive note.
Yusuf Maart came close to breaking the deadlock with a header, and Wandile Duba’s shot narrowly missed the target. Chippa coach Kwanele Kopo, dissatisfied with his team’s performance, made an early substitution, replacing Ayabulela Konqobo with Baraka Majogoro in the 35th minute.
Duba continued to pose a threat, forcing another save from Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. However, it was Shabalala who stole the show. With a dazzling display of skill, he evaded four defenders before unleashing a thunderous strike past Nwabali, giving Chiefs a well-deserved lead before halftime.
In the second half, Ashley Du Preez’s first-time shot nearly caught Nwabali off guard. Chiefs continued to press, but a brief moment of concern arose when Bruce Bvuma nearly fumbled Sinoxolo Kwayiba’s header, which fortunately bounced off the crossbar.
Late in the game, Chippa mounted a late surge, but Bvuma denied Kwayiba from close range. Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi urged his players to maintain focus and withstand Chippa’s pressure.
This victory provided a much-needed boost for Chiefs, ending a disappointing 2024 on a high note. Their previous season had been marked by underperformance, with a disappointing finish outside the top eight.
