Nesta Returns To Monza Just Days In South Africa

After spending a few days in South Africa, Italian legend Alessandro Nesta has returned to management.

Nesta, who won the FIFA World Cup with Italy in 2006, has been reappointed as manager of Monza, just seven weeks after being sacked by the same club.

Nesta was in South Africa late last week, accompanying the FIFA Club World Cup trophy, which was unveiled at Mamelodi Sundowns’ headquarters in Chloorkop on Thursday. He was also in attendance at Loftus Stadium on Saturday to witness Sundowns’ 4-1 victory over Orlando Pirates.

South Africa and Sundowns were given a preview of the FIFA Club World Cup trophy, as Sundowns will be participating in the expanded tournament set to take place in the US in June. Nesta was a fitting ambassador for the trophy, having won it with AC Milan in 2007, the same year he won the UEFA Champions League with the Rossoneri under Carlo Ancelotti.

The 48-year-old replaces Salvatore Bocchetti, who succeeded him in December but was dismissed following a 5-1 defeat by Lazio on Sunday. That result leaves Monza eight points from safety at the bottom of Serie A.

Nesta was initially appointed Monza manager in July, taking his first managerial job in Serie A, but was sacked in December.

One of the greatest defenders of all time, Nesta made 326 appearances and scored 10 goals for Milan. He has now been reappointed by Monza on a contract that runs until the end of the season.
