Orlando Pirates head coach Abdelsam Ouaddou says the 2-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday was crucial in keeping their title ambitions alive and closing the gap on league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Soweto Giants climbed to third on the PSL log after goals from Evidence Makgopa and Tshegofatso Mabasa secured all three points at Orlando Stadium.

With the win, Pirates are now just six points behind Sundowns, who have played three more games, and five points behind Sekhukhune United, who are in second place but have played two extra matches.

Ouaddou praised his team’s discipline and unity against a determined opponent.

“It was a very difficult game – we were expecting a strong opponent, and we got it,” said Ouaddou. “Galaxy always come with ambition when they play us, but I’m very happy with the spirit and unity of my players. They respected the game plan, and the victory helps us stay close to the top teams.”

Pirates, who lost their opening two league matches, have turned their season around with five straight Betway Premiership wins and eight victories in all competitions. Their strong run also includes successfully defending the MTN8 trophy last month.

“This win was important to keep our momentum. We want to stay close to the top, and I hope the players keep this spirit until the end of the season,” Ouaddou added.
