Ouaddou Emphasizes Importance Of Carling Victory Ahead Of Sundowns Clash

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou highlighted the significance of their victory over Magesi in the quarterfinal of the Carling Knockout, ahead of their upcoming Betway Premiership match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday. 

The Buccaneers secured a crucial win at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening, with Tshepang Moremi and Evidence Makgopa scoring in the second half.

The win comes as a boost to the Pirates’ confidence, especially after a disappointing loss in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round second leg against Lupopo.

The MTN8 champions lost 5-4 on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate, with each team winning 3-0 at home. Despite the setback, Pirates bounced back with a much-needed victory against Magesi.

“It’s very important, of course, to reach the semifinals because it’s a cup game and it’s an important competition for us,” Ouaddou said.

“Of course, even though we won the last game in the Champions League, and at least see the results. We didn’t qualify, but it was very important to win so that we keep this confidence we have.”

The Buccaneers will be looking to continue their unbeaten run against Sundowns, as in the last three games, they haven’t lost – specifically in the MTN8 semifinals this season and also in the second round of the Betway Premiership last season. However, Pirates has not defeated Sundowns away in the league match since 2018 when they won 3-1. 

“We have an important game on the weekend, it’s very important to keep this dynamic, especially at home with this victory,” Ouaddou added.

The former Marumo Gallants coach emphasized the need for his team to maintain the momentum gained from the win against Magesi as they prepare to face one of the biggest clubs in South African football.

With the Pirates looking to build on their Carling Knockout success, the match against Sundowns will be a crucial test of their strength and determination.
