Kaizer Chiefs Legends secured a narrow 1-0 victory over the KZN Legends in an entertaining curtain-raiser ahead of the Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup final at Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi Regional Stadium on Saturday.   

A solitary goal from Thuso Phala was enough to separate the two sides in a match that saw some of South Africa’s football greats roll back the years.

The game featured ex-players like Mandla Masango, Siyabonga Sangweni, Arthur Zwane, Jabu Mahlangu, Josta Dladla, Sthembiso Ngcobo, Willard Katsande, Siyabonga Nomvethe, Tefu Mashamaite, and Nhlanhla Kubheka.

While the pace may have diminished with time, the legends still displayed glimpses of their signature flair and technical quality, captivating the crowd.

Chiefs Legends dominated possession in the first half, with Nomvethe creating attacking opportunities on the wings. Despite their control, the final touch was lacking, and the teams went into halftime locked in a goalless draw.

The second half unfolded similarly, with Chiefs controlling play through sharp one-touch passing.

The breakthrough finally came when Phala capitalized on a defensive miscommunication between Sangweni and Njabulo Manqana to score the match-winning goal.

Though the game was more about entertainment than competitiveness, the players showcased their class and gave fans a nostalgic taste of their former brilliance.
