Pirates Advance To MTN8 Semis With Convincing Win Over Polokwane City

Orlando Pirates have secured a spot in the semifinals of the MTN8 Cup following their impressive 2-0 victory over Polokwane City at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers started the game on a high note, dominating the proceedings with precise passing and creating numerous scoring opportunities.
Their efforts paid off in the 13th minute when Oswin Appollis scored a brilliant goal, courtesy of a fantastic assist from Boitumelo Radiopane.
Rise and Shine pulled up their socks after 20 minutes and began creating chances of their own.
They almost scored in the 25th minute after a defensive mistake by Sipho Chaine and Nkosinathi Sibisi, but Pirates goalkeeper made a crucial save to deny the visitors an equalizer.
The Buccaneers doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Patrick Maswanganyi scored a penalty kick after Ayabonga Gwangqa fouled Appollis inside the box.
Both teams continued to play well, creating scoring opportunities, but the first half ended with Pirates leading 2-0.
In the second half, both teams started strongly, creating numerous chances, but neither team managed to score in the opening 15 minutes.
In the 60th minute, coach Abdeslami Ouaddou introduced Tshepang Moremi and Yanela Mbuthuma to strengthen the attack, and their introduction had an immediate impact.
The Buccaneers earned a free kick in the 65th minute, which was taken by Namibian international Deon Hotto, but his excellent ball hit the crossbar.
Ouaddou made another tactical substitution in the 70th minute, introducing Abdoulaye Mariko and Kabelo Dlamini to rest Maswanganyi and Sipho Mbule.
Despite creating numerous chances, the Buccaneers struggled to score, and the game ended 2-0 in their favor.
This result marks a disappointing back-to-back quarterfinal loss for Polokwane, who lost 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the same stage of the tournament last season.
For Pirates, this win brings them one step closer to winning the title for the fourth time in a row, having won in the past three seasons under the guidance of Spanish mentor Jose Riveiro, who is now with Al Ahly in Egypt.
The win also marked Ouaddou’s first official game as the head coach of the Buccaneers. Pirates will learn their semifinal opponent on Sunday, following the draw after the quarterfinal match between Sundowns and Richards Bay.
The Buccaneers will look to build on this momentum as they aim to claim the title under Ouaddou’s guidance.
