Pirates Fire Blanks In CAF Opener
Orlando Pirates were held to a goalless draw by Madagascan side CS Disciples in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round at National Sports Complex Pitch 1 in Saint Pierre on Sunday.
Despite dominating the match and putting the home side under pressure, Pirates couldn’t find a breakthrough ahead of the second leg. Players like Monnapule Saleng, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Tshegofatso Mabasa created chances but were unable to capitalize. Jose Riveiro’s side was lucky not to concede in the dying minutes of the game. Sipho Chaine also made few saves to save the day for the Soweto giants
However, Pirates came close when Mabasa’s effort was denied by the crossbar after a good combination with Kabelo Dlamini.
The Soweto giants are aiming to reach the Champions League group stages this season after being eliminated in the second round last year via a penalty shootout by Botswana side Jwaneng Galaxy. However, they know they must overcome two rounds to achieve this goal.
Pirates will host DS Disciples in the second leg at Orlando Stadium on Saturday (19:30).
