PSL Fines Chiefs & Pirates For Spectator Misconduct

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have been charged by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) for spectator misconduct following incidents during their Soweto Derby clash and a match against Mamelodi Sundowns, respectively, as announced by the PSL prosecutor on Thursday.

Both Pirates and Chiefs had existing records of spectator misconduct within the league, leading to the imposition of substantial monetary fines. Chiefs were fined R150,000, while Pirates were fined R125,000.

Chiefs were fined for spectator behavior during their match against Pirates at FNB Stadium on February 1st. Pirates, on the other hand, were charged for misconduct during their recent loss against Sundowns.

“Kaizer Chiefs football club was found with an amount of R100,000 of which R50,000 is suspended for a period of 12 months on condition that during the period of suspension, they are not found guilty of the same offence,” said PSL prosecutor Majavu on Thursday.

“Sadly and unfortunately, in October last year, Kaizer Chiefs appeared before the PSL DC facing the same charges in respect of they were found an amount of R200,000, R100,000 was suspended on condition that they do not reoffend for the duration of suspension.

“Now that they have reoffended and convicted accordingly, it means that the suspended R100,000 is triggered and payable immediately. In total, it means that Kaizer Chiefs will pay an amount R150,000 plus pro rata cost of today’s sitting.

“The reason for pro ration thereof is simple because they were charged on the same day an appeared on the same day with Orlando Pirates in front of the same DC.

“Moving to Orlando Pirates, I can also confirm that they too were charged for misconduct arising from misbehavior throwing incident by their spectators. They too pleaded guilty as charge and they were fined an amount of R100,000 of which R25000 is suspended for 12 months on the same condition that they are not to reoffend during the period of suspension.

“Which, therefore, means they too appeared before the PSL DC of facing the same charges where they were fined an amount of R100,000 of which R50,000 was suspended.

“Now, that they have reoffended and they have been convicted as such, the R50,000 that was suspended has been triggered and payable immediately.

“And in respect of the new offence, they were fined R100,000 of which R25000 is suspended and R75000 is payable immediately. In total, it means Orlando Pirates will have to pay R125000 together with half the portion of today’s cost which they will share with Kaizer Chiefs for the reasons I have explained earlier.

“The pro ration of the cost was an attempt by the prosecution to try and minimise the financial harshness that the club will have to endure as a result of this.

“And because they appeared on the same day and pleaded guilty immediately, we deemed it prudent to let them share the cost as opposed to settling each club with a full cost. That will not be equitable for in our view.”
