Pirates & Sundowns Avoid Clash, Face ES Tunis & MC Alger

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have avoided each other in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, following a draw conducted at beIN Sports’ headquarters in Doha on Thursday.

Sundowns, who finished second in Group B and were therefore unseeded, will face ES Tunis in Tunisia. This is a rematch of last season’s semi-final, where the Tunisian side prevailed 2-0 on aggregate.

Notably, ES Tunis was coached by Sundowns’ current coach, Miguel Cardoso, when they lost to Al Ahly of Egypt in the final.

Pirates, having topped Group C and thus being seeded, will face MC Alger in the quarter-finals. As a seeded team, Pirates will play the second leg at Orlando Stadium.

Sundowns, being unseeded and narrowly avoiding a draw against Pirates, will play the first leg at home against ES Tunis and the second leg away.

The Champions League draw was conducted by Rainford Kalaba, who won the African Cup of Nations with Zambia in 2012 and the CAF Champions League with TP Mazembe in 2015, and Wael Gomaa, who won the CAF Champions League six times with Al Ahly.

If Sundowns win their tie, they will face either Al Ahly or Al Hilal in the semi-finals. If Pirates are victorious, they will play Pyramids or AS FAR in the semi-finals.

Should both South African teams advance to the final, it would mark the first all-South African final in CAF club competition history.

The Champions League quarter-finals are scheduled to take place in April
