Rayners Makes History For Sundowns At FIFA Club World Cup

Iqraam Rayners etched his name into the history books on Saturday when Mamelodi Sundowns faced a defeat against Borussia Dortmund in their second group stage match of the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA.

Rayners became the first African player to score in consecutive games in the expanded tournament. He is also the first player to score twice in consecutive games while playing for a South African club in the competition, and only the second player overall to score for a South African club in the tournament’s history.

The last player to score for a South African club was Percy Tau, who found the net when Sundowns were heavily defeated 4-1 by Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the fifth-place playoff in 2016.

Rayners, who joined Sundowns from Stellenbosch at the start of last season after the African giants triggered his release clause, scored his first goal in the competition when Sundowns defeated Ulsan HD 1-0 in their opening group match.

He calmly tucked away a superb defense-splitting pass from Lucas Ribeiro Costa. Although the Bafana Bafana striker scored two other goals in the same match, they were disallowed for offside.

Against Dortmund in Cincinnati, Teboho Mokoena delivered a perfectly weighted free-kick. Rayners’ initial header struck the post, but he reacted quickly, swiveling his body to score from the rebound, making the score 4-2 on the day.

Sundowns continued their possession-based football, keeping the German side at arm’s length. They were rewarded with a third goal when substitutes Kutlwano Letlhaku and Lebo Mothiba combined, with Mothiba firing home in the 90th minute. However, this late goal wasn’t enough to secure a draw, as Dortmund held on for the 4-3 win to move to the top of Group F.

Following the loss, Sundowns has dropped to third in the group with three points after two matches. A victory against Fluminense in their final group stage match on Wednesday will secure Sundowns’ place in the knockout stages. Rayners will be looking to add to his tally against the Brazilian side.

With two goals, Rayners is currently joint-eighth in the competition’s goalscoring charts, level with a host of prominent players including İlkay Gündoğan (Manchester City), Pablo Barrios (Atletico Madrid), Leandro Barreiro (Benfica), Lautaro Martinez (Inter Milan), Igor Jesus (Botafogo), Pedro Neto (Chelsea), Francisco Conceição and Randal Kolo Muani (both Juventus), and Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller (both Bayern Munich).

The current top scorers in the competition, with three goals each, are Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala (both Bayern Munich), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), and Kenan Yildiz (Juventus).

Cristiano Ronaldo remains the all-time leading goalscorer in this competition, having netted seven times.
