Riveiro On Bafana Job: Let’s See What Happens

Former Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has distanced himself from discussions linking him to the Bafana Bafana coaching job after next year’s FIFA World Cup, saying it is not a conversation he wants to entertain at this stage.

Hugo Broos has already informed the South African Football Association (SAFA) that he will retire after the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico—meaning Bafana Bafana will be without a head coach after the global showpiece.

Riveiro, who left Pirates before the end of last season, is currently without a club following his departure from Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he spent just four months in charge.

“South Africa has a national team coach right now. I mean, we are living today,” said Riveiro.

“I would answer you, but we have to enjoy the moment right now. South Africa is doing so well in terms of football.

“We are about to go to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which runs from 21 December to 18 January 2026. The World Cup is also on the horizon. The team is playing good football, and people are returning to stadiums to watch Bafana Bafana.

“So let’s enjoy the moment. Let’s give all the support to Hugo, his staff, and the players because they are on the verge of achieving something special for South Africa.

“Let’s see what happens after that. There will be plenty of discussions about the job—naturally.”

Regarded as one of the most successful coaches in Orlando Pirates’ recent history, Riveiro was later asked whether he has aspirations to coach a national team and what makes the current Bafana setup an attractive project for any incoming coach.

“I’m going to repeat myself,” he insisted.

“We have to live in the present. We must appreciate what Bafana are doing right now. Whatever happens in the future will not be decided at this moment, right? I think we all agree on that.

“Let’s enjoy the football they’re playing and appreciate the work Hugo and his staff have put in over the last three or four years.

“It is finally paying off with good performances and exciting football. As spectators, we must take part in this moment for South African football.

“We cannot take tomorrow for granted—let alone speculate on what will happen in seven months’ time.”

Bafana Bafana, placed in Pot 3, will discover their opponents for the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage when the draw takes place in the United States on 5 December.
