Rulani Guides Wydad Into Throne Cup Last 16

Rulani Mokwena’s Wydad Athletic Club progressed to the last 16 of the Moroccan Throne Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over FUS Rabat at Stade Larbi Zaouli Stadium overnight.
Mohamed Moufid scored the only goal of the match with a thundering strike from the edge of the box and into the top corner in the 58th minute – a goal that proved enough to seal passage into the next round.
South African players Thembinkosi Lorch and Cassius Mailula were involved in the match, with the on-loan Mamelodi Sundowns star getting a starting berth while the latter was named amongst the substitutes.
The Red Castle will take on Moghreb Tetouan in the round of 16 on Friday, 04 April 2025. Tetouan, who are in 15th place in the Botola Pro League and booked their last 16 spot with a slender 1-0 win over second-tier side IZ Khemisset, will host the fixture against Wydad.
Mokwena’s men are still in contention to lift a trophy this season as they are still participating in the Excellence Cup in addition to the Throne. Additionally, Wydad is in third place and fighting for a CAF Champions League spot in the league.
While they are unbeaten in their last nine league outings, with their last defeat dating back to December 2024, the 22-time Moroccan champions dropped crucial points in recent weeks with four consecutive draws.
Wydad accumulated 43 points and trails already-champions RS Berkane with 17 points after 25 matches played. Moreover, Mokwena’s troops are two points behind AS FAR and level with FUS Rabat, while Renaissance Club Zemamra collected 40 points as the race for a Champions League spot heats up.
