Saleng Scores The Late Winner As Pirates Beat Chippa
Orlando Pirates kicked off their Betway Premiership campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chippa United at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday.
The game was a thrilling encounter that saw both teams battle it out until the final whistle.
Andile Jali gave Chippa United the lead with a powerful strike from outside the box in the 22nd minute. However, Pirates responded quickly, with Tshegoafatso Mabasa converting a penalty to level the scoreline in the referee’s optional time.
The game remained tied 1-1 until the dying moments of the match when Monnapule Saleng headed home a cross from Deon Hotto to secure a dramatic win for Pirates. The victory was crucial for the Soweto giants, who were looking to make a strong statement after their rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns had opened the season with wins.
Despite facing a determined Chippa side, Pirates managed to create numerous chances throughout the game. Saleng was particularly impressive, causing problems for the Chippa defense with his pace and skill.
The win will boost Pirates’ confidence as they look to challenge for the Betway Premiership title this season. Chippa, on the other hand, will be disappointed to have lost the match, but they can take heart from their performance.
In other results on Wednesday, Golden Arrows beat Stellenbosch 2-0 at Athlone Stadium with goals from Siyanda Mthanti and Lungelo Nguse, while Sekhukhune United beat newbies Magesi FC 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium.
