Stellenbosch Forced To Play Home Games In Durban
Stellenbosch FC will temporarily relocate their home matches to Durban due to the poor condition of their home ground, Danie Craven Stadium.
The venue suffered significant damage and it was evident during a recent MTN8 quarter-final match and is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
The club’s decision to play in Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium is also influenced by the unavailability of other suitable venues in Cape Town. The DHL Cape Town Stadium is occupied for a Rugby Championship match between the Springbok against New Zealand on 7 September, and the Athlone Stadium is also undergoing pitch repairs.
Stellenbosch’s first match in Durban will be against Nzingizini Hotspurs in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round on Saturday, with the Eswatini club long decided to play in Durban as they don’t have a suitable in the neighboring country.
The club has also confirmed that the second leg of their MTN8 semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns will be played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 1 September.
In a statement, Stellenbosch FC apologized to their supporters for the inconvenience caused by the venue changes and assured them that they are working to ensure the return of football to the Western Cape as soon as possible.
The club hopes to be able to resume playing at Danie Craven Stadium for their first league match of the 2024/25 season against Golden Arrows on 15 September, provided that the pitch has recovered sufficiently.
