Stellenbosch’s Confed Cup Opener To Be Played In Durban

Stellenbosch FC will play their CAF Confederation Cup first-round match against Nsingizini Hotspurs at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

This was according to Stellenbosch CEO Rob Benadie during the online interview with South Africa Football Journalists Association (SAFJA) on Wednesday.

Stellenbosch, who qualified for the Confederation Cup after finishing third last term, will face Nsingizini Hotspurs of Eswatini and the first leg will take place on 16 August.

Since Eswatini lacks CAF/FIFA-approved venues, Hotspurs opted for the 2010 World Cup venue in South Africa. This benefits Stellenbosch, who hold positive memories of winning the Carling Knockout trophy there last year.

“That game, as we have been informed, they (Hotspurs) are going to play their home matches at the Moses Mabhida Stadium,” said Benadie.

“So, we will have to travel to Durban to play an away game which is really fortunate for us to go there.”

The Moses Mabhida Stadium has been playing some international matches of late. Lesotho took their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the venue, starting last year November against Benin and last month against Rwanda.

Zimbabwe, who are one of 17 member associations in Africa who are barred to play CAF or FIFA matches, play their home matches in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers in South Africa.

If Stellenbosch advance, they’ll face Congolese giants AS Vita Club in the second round.

“And if we get through that period round, we will play AS Vita Club of Congo and we will have to go to Kinshasa,” said Benadie.

“That will be like our first big test for us into Africa – flying back to play on a Tuesday and playing on a Friday in the PSL. We will be tested, but we will try to get as much information from all the other teams as we can to be prepared.”

Stellenbosch joins Sekhukhune United in the Confederation Cup, while Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will compete in the Champions League.
