Stellies’ Carling Knockout Hero Returns For Second Spell
Stellenbosch have been reunited with a hero from their past, Darrel Matsheke, who has etched his name into the history of the club.
Matsheke has re-signed for Stellenbosch, reuniting with coach Gavin Hunt, with the duo having previously worked together at Kaizer Chiefs.
In fact, it was Hunt who handed Matsheke his PSL debut during his short stint at Naturena in the 2020/21 season.
Matsheke scored the winning penalty as Stellies claimed the Carling Knockout trophy in the 2023/24 season, beating TS Galaxy at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
In announcing his return, Stellies highlighted the midfielder’s positive spell with the club during the 2023/24 campaign.
“Stellenbosch Football Club is pleased to announce that midfielder Darrel Matsheke has rejoined the Club for a second spell,” said Stellenbosch in a statement.
“Matsheke previously represented Stellenbosch during the 2023-24 season and was part of the squad that won the Carling Knockout trophy, notably scoring the winning spot-kick during the penalty shootout victory over TS Galaxy in the final.
“He ultimately made 12 appearances across all competitions during his first stint in the Winelands, before going on to play for the likes of Pretoria Callies and Kruger United.”
Matsheke said: “It feels great to be back at Stellenbosch FC.
“It was unexpected, but I am really happy to be here. I can only thank God for the opportunity, and the Club and the coach for trusting me enough to bring me back.
“I want to pick up where I left off on the field and help the team compete for more. I missed out on the opportunity to play in Africa last time, so there’s a bit of unfinished business, but this is a second chance for me to do more and achieve those goals.”
Matsheke will wear the No. 31 jersey this season and could make his debut when the Maroons take on Kruger United in the Betway Premiership this weekend.
Stellies, who are ninth on the table, will be in action when they visit Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.
It remains unclear whether Matsheke will be part of the matchday squad.
