Stellies Pay Tribute To New Pirates Defender
Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie has paid tribute to departing defender and captain Deano van Rooyen, who has joined Orlando Pirates.
Van Rooyen’s move to Pirates was driven by the Soweto giants’ need to strengthen their right-back position, as key players Bandile Shandu and Thabiso Lebitso have been sidelined with injuries.
The 27-year-old was a standout performer for Stellenbosch FC last season, helping the club secure a third-place finish in the DStv Premiership and clinch their first-ever trophy, the Carling Knockout Cup. He made 35 appearances in all competitions, contributing one goal and one assist.
Van Rooyen has signed a three-year contract with Pirates, with an option to extend for two more years. Benadie expressed his gratitude for van Rooyen’s contributions to the club and wished him all the best in his future endeavors.
“It has been a privilege to watch Deano grow over the last eight years from a young and hopeful talent into a household name in Stellenbosch,” Benadie said in a statement.
“To see a local player break through the ranks and become a respected leader on the pitch and in our community has been a source of great pride for all associated with the Club.
“While we are sad to see him leave, we are immensely grateful for his contributions and proud of all he has achieved and wish him nothing but success in his future endeavours.”
In all competitions, Van Rooyen featured in 134 matches along with eight assists, scoring four goals.
Van Rooyen’s departure follows that of Iqraam Rayners, who has also joined Mamelodi Sundowns. The loss of both players will be a significant blow to Stellenbosch FC as they look to build on their recent success.
