Stellies Return To Durban For CAF Clash

Stellenbosch FC is once again heading to Durban. Steve Barker’s side has opted to host their CAF Confederation Cup match against RS Berkane at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on 8 December.
The decision to move the match against the Moroccan side to Durban was necessitated by a Rugby Sevens tournament scheduled for DHL Stadium.
This isn’t the first time Stellies has had to relocate due to venue issues. The Stormers, too, have taken their Champions Cup match against Toulon to Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next weekend.
Stellies’ home ground, Danie Craven Stadium, has been plagued by pitch problems. The PSL closed it down in August due to its poor condition, characterized by sandy patches and overall degradation when Barker’s side hosted TS Galaxy in the MTN8 quarter-finals. CAF also did not approve the venue, failing short to meet its requirements.
Despite attempts at rehabilitation, the venue has yet to be deemed fit for play. This has forced Stellies to play their home matches at alternative venues, including Athlone Stadium and DHL Stadium.
Interestingly, the Stormers were allowed to host a URC match against Glasgow Warriors at Danie Craven in October, despite the PSL’s closure order.
Moses Mabhida Stadium has become a familiar venue for Stellies this season. They previously hosted CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round matches against Nsingizini Hotspurs. Their MTN8 semi-final against Mamelodi Sundowns was played at the Durban venue before losing the final against Orlando Pirates played at this venue.
The Durban venue also holds good dust for Barker’s side – they clinched their first trophy, the Carling Knockout against TS Galaxy last season.
In other news, Stellenbosch FC has officially confirmed the signing of Nigerian defender Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill as a free agent. Coach Barker had previously announced the signing, but visa issues had delayed his arrival in South Africa.
